Stingers are a species of parasitic stingray indigenous to Hyrule's moist environments, including but not limited to its Water Temple and inside creatures such as Lord Jabu-Jabu's belly. Their bodies are filled with electroplaques, allowing them to emit a moderately dangerous shock to predator and prey alike.

Fragile creatures by nature, they will generally travel in packs while scouring the sea bed for food, which typically keeps them out of harm's way as well as allowing them to sense nearby vibrations. Upon sensing a disruption they will launch themselves out of the water and float around their intended target, keeping their distance until they are ready to strike.

In terms of adaptations used strictly for defense, they utilize an odd countershading camouflage with a blue dorsal region and a red ventral area. If parasitizing a larger animal, they are known to also burrow into and hide within its flesh, which irritates the creature's skin and causes mild bruising.

An adventurer can easily dispatch a Stinger by way of generally any item, such as a hookshot, boomerang (which will only stun the creature) or even slingshot. They can even be crushed under the weight of a small child. However, it may actually take multiple hits to finally kill the creature.
