The Spine-tailed Squirrel (Humisciurus spinacaudatus) is a squirrel species which evolved circa 50 million years in the future, and inhabits the coniferous forests of the Earth's Northern Continent. This animal has developed an efficient defense mechanism: its long, broad tail is covered with sharp quills on the underside. These quills can be erected when the animal feels threatened, as it turns the tail upwards and shields its body with it to protect itself against predators such as the Pamthret.
