— Smog challenges Link

Smog is an intelligent cloud monster, who encountered Link at the end of the Crown Dungeon, the fifth dungeon in the kingdom of Labrynna that appears in The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages.

Background history[]

Unlike most of Link's foes, Smog was willing to do battle but preferred to do so in a battle of wits. To this effect Smog split itself into a trio of smaller versions of himself and moved along blocks found in the room. Link soon discovered that Smog was actually immune to harm whilst split into separate parts and so the Hylian hero was left with little choice but to forcibly merge Smog back together into its whole self to deal damage to it. He succeeded in doing just this by pushing various blocks together in order to force each of Smog's pieces into a direct path with one another, and whenever there was no blocks available to push he was able to use the dungeon's key item, the Cane of Somaria, to place an extra one.

Should Link make one of Smog's puzzles unsolvable he was able to step upon a 'reset switch' at the cost of his own health to reset the entire room back to its original state.

Eventually Smog succumbed to his wounds and Link was victorious. With Smog's death, Link was able to obtain the Sacred Soil, he fifth Essence of Time.

Abilities[]

Smog possesses the ability to split itself into two or three parts, with two parts being half the size of its true form and three parts being even smaller still. When split into any number of other parts, Smog can launch blue energy clouds at its foe to deal damage, but when fully reunited these become full on electric bolts. Link was able to block the blue clouds with a slash of his sword but was defenseless against the lightning. When reunited, Smog is also electric and will zap any being foolish enough to make physical contact with it.
