The "Fog Worm" is an unidentified species of large, predatory worms which inhabited the Earth in a distant time, speculated to be Precambrian in origin. They lived in an environment covered with a dense sulfurous mist, possibly representing the atmosphere of this primitive Earth.

Once a temporal anomaly opened in the 21st century, a group of these creatures passed through along with their native ooze, but they could not survive outside of it, as the oxygen-rich atmosphere of the present proved deadly to them.

Biology[]

These worms appear to act as ambush predators and are easily capable of killing a human being. Although seemingly blind (or at least having extremely poor vision) they can easily locate prey by sound. They spit a black slime-like substance, possibly used to stun prey or confuse it. Their blood is red, suggesting that they do require oxygen, even though large concentrations of it will kill them. They're also sensitive to high temperatures, and appear to require a cold environment, as the combination of oxygen and rising temperatures causes them to violently explode. They also appear to be viviparous, as when they explode, young offspring are released from their bodies. These young worms have been observed trying to bury into the flesh of people they cling to, suggesting the possibility that they might be parasitoids.

Notes[]

  • It has been speculated that the Fog Worm might represent an older and much larger relative of the priapulid-like Ottoia. Although no animal approaching this size is known from the Precambrian, there exist worm fossils from the early Cambrian which resemble priapulids, so the idea isn't too far-fetched. Another possible identity for it would be some kind of giant undiscovered nematode, as the Fog Worm's three-part mandible suggests an affinity with these creatures, and Precambrian nematodes aren't unheard of.
