Gwoemul was a giant mutant predator from South Korea in The Host film.

Overview[]

Gwoemul was a large amphibious predator mutated from an unknown organism (though it has been mentioned by some to be a Tadpole, but this has not been confirmed) by various pollutants in the Han River. It was an extremely aggressive and dangerous creature that would often hunt humans near the river, bringing them back to its lair in the sewers. It was afraid of fire; ultimately it died after being set on fire.

Feeding Habits[]

Host2

Gwoemul hunting.

While Gwoemul had a segmented jaw and multiple other mandibles rowed with dreadfully sharp teeth, it appeared to only be able to ingest food whole. In its initial attack of the surrounding people near the Han River, it was shown grabbing a woman by the head with one of its deformed smaller appendages and dragging her with others down into the river to devour later. Gwoemul was also seen much later looming over its "lair" (a sewer pit), regurgitating a huge number of bones into it. This would allow Gwoemul to be able to survive long periods without food (assuming its biology works like a reptile's).

Gwoemul also has a bizarre habit. Whenever it senses liquid splashing around it in the form of rain (whether or not the liquid actually IS water), it will tilt its head back and catch the liquid in its mouth, gulping it down single-mindedly. In one instance the liquid was gasoline, but Gwoemul continued to perform this strange ritual. This raises the question "Does Gwoemul have a sentience level at all?" It clearly doesn't seem to realize that the liquid it was drinking was toxic to most other forms of life, and certainly didn't taste like water. The creature also seems to be rather clumsy on land,

Notes[]

  • The creature's name, "Gwoemul", literally translates to "Monster" from Revised Romanized Korean.
  • The creature's design was inspired by an actual mutant fish found in the Han River.
  • There is some speculation that the creature may have mutated from an amphibian, rather than a fish.
  • Another creature will appear in an upcoming sequel which is currently in production.
  • The creature's locomotion were inspired by references from snakes, crocodiles, amphibians, fishes, monkeys, and whales.[1]
  • The creature can be seen as symbolism of mishandling toxic chemicals and their effects on nature, similar to Godzilla being the personification of nuclear weapons.
