The Humanoid Bat (a.k.a. Human Bat or Bat-Thing) is a creature of mysterious origins, which was captured by hunters in the forests of Montana, 1956. Its body was examined by a physician who concluded that the entity was neither man nor animal. Afterwards the creature, the doctor and the hunters all disappear or are found dead, indicating either that the monster was not dead at first or that another of its kind has taken revenge.

The story has since been mostly forgotten until the year 2000, when Agents Scully and Doggett from FBI are sent to investigate the case of an elderly gravedigger and his wife which have been found dead and partially devoured. Other deaths followed and the agents realized that all victims had been in contact with a recently discovered burned corpse on the river, belonging to the late wife of Ernie Stefaniak, one of the hunters who had shot the bat creature 44 years before.

Stefaniak turned out to have been hiding in an isolated cabin all the time, trying to escape from the vengeful monster. The creatures' perseverance in chasing its prey is such that it would attack any person who had even the most indirect contact with Stefaniak. When his wife died, the hunter burned her body and threw it in the river, but even that wasn't enough for the creature to lose its track, as it proceeded to attack those which had been in contact with the corpse, including the gravedigger, the victim's mother and the city delegate. The bat creature was eventually able to find Stefaniak and kill him as well, but was shot multiple times by the agents and disappeared into the night. Doggett expresses conviction that the monster is dead now, but that hasn't stopped Stefaniak's brother from moving out to find a new place to hide from the cursed beast.

The humanoid bat is about 1.5 meters tall and looks like a goblin with short membranous wings and four clawed toes on each feet. An analysis of its saliva has found traces of enzymes present only in bats. It can fly over short distances and is only active at night, as it spends the day asleep hanging upside down from trees or ceilings, as do other bats. Although its origins are unexplained, Stefaniak speculates that since bats are as advanced mammals as primates, perhaps a sort of man has evolved at some point from the bat lineage analogous to how humans evolved from monkey-like creatures.
