The Grinch is a grumpy recluse being which lives close to the microscopic village of Whoville, believed to be located entirely within a dust speck (a snowflake in the movie adaptation). He looks similar to the native Whos, only covered in more hair - usually portrayed as green but colored white in the original book. In the movie, he is acknowledged as a "What", opposed to a Who.
Biography[]
Unlike the holiday-passionate Whos, the Grinch furiously hates Christmas and everything to do with it. Though the exact reason is unclear, most believe he does so because his heart was two sizes too small. He lives as a hermit in a cave north of the city, with his loyal dog Max as his only companion. On his 53rd Christmas, the annoyed Grinch attempted to get rid of the holiday once for all by dressing as Santa Claus and plundering the city, stealing all the decoration, food and presents and taking them to the mountaintop, intending to throw them down the valley. Before that, he stops to try to listen to the cries of the unsuspecting Whos when they wake up to discover Christmas has been stolen. What follows, however, surprises the Grinch, as he realizes that the Whos are still happy, singing and fraternizing. This causes the astounded Grinch to realize the true spirit of the holiday which has nothing to do with material items. As he realizes that, the Grinch's heart grows three sizes larger and he redeems himself by giving back the stolen things and celebrating Christmas with the others.
Abilities[]
In the live action film adaptation of the story, the Grinch is portrayed with superhuman strength, able to lift a full sleigh of stolen items over his head. He is also able to leap impossible distances and to consume glass and toxic wastes unharmed.
